Newport Mansions - A Famous Rhode Island Landmark. Among the most famous attractions in Rhode Island are the Newport Mansions.  Managed by the Preservation Society of Newport County, 11 magnificent fully furnished estates dating as far back as the 1700s are open to the public.  These exquisitely restored and preserved mansions served primarily as summer residences for America's wealthiest including the Vanderbilt family.  The Newport Mansions represent various architectural styles including Colonial, Victorian, and Gilded Age
The Breakers - The Most Famous Newport Mansion. Regarded as the most grand of the Newport Mansions, The Breakers is a stunning Italian Renaissance-style palazzo that was commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt, II, in 1893.  The 70-room estate is adorned with thousands of handmade relief sculptures and surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens.  The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark.
The Elms - A Gilded Age Landmark. One of the most visited Newport mansions is The Elms.  Celebrating the Gilded Age, The Elms mansion is reminiscent of the Great Gatsby.  Owned by Pennsylvania coal baron Edward Julius Berwind, The Elms was modeled after d'Asnieres, a French chateau located outside of Paris.  Construction was completed in 1901 at an estimated cost of $1.4 million.  The grounds feature Classic Revival gardens with expansive terraces, bronze and marble sculptures, fountains, marble pavilions, a carriage house and garage.
Newport Mansions Tours. The Preservation Society of Newport County offers a variety of tour packages for visiting the Newport Mansions.  Plan a full day to explore the mansions at your own pace.  The 11 mansions are within walking distance of each other.  Among the tours offered are One Property tours where visitors choose to visit the home of their choice, excluding The Breakers and Hunter House; The seasonal Elms After Hours Tour that includes wine and canapés on the terrace; and the Newport Mansions Experience that includes admission to any five mansions, excluding Hunter House.  The Newport Mansions district in Newport, Rhode Island is located less than 30 miles from NYLO Providence/Warwick.  Visit www.newportmansions.org
