Roger Williams Park & Zoo
Roger Williams Park in Providence is regarded as one of the most important attractions and urban parks in Rhode Island. The park was established in the 1800s when the land was willed to the city by the last descendant of Roger Williams who owned the land and was the founder of Providence. Roger Williams Park today is home to a zoo, natural museum and planetarium, lakes, botanical gardens, Temple to Music, a carousel, and much more. Roger Williams Zoo. Roger Williams Zoo opened in 1872 and is the third oldest zoo in the country. The zoo is home to thousands of animals, including 130 species of rare and endangered animals. Roger Williams Zoo is affiliated with the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and provides care for 20 SSP species including a snow leopard, African elephant, and red wolf which was at one time extinct in the wild. As an SSP affiliate, the zoo aims to help restore endangered animal populations. The zoo is divided into themed exhibits including the Marco Polo Trail that traces Marco Polo's three-year expedition through Asia; Tropical America which features a sky-walk bridge through a tree and foliage canopy; and Wetlands which serves to explain the importance of the most threatened habitat in Rhode Island.
Museum of Natural History & Planetarium. The Museum of Natural History & Planetarium is the only natural history museum and planetarium in Rhode Island. The museum features interesting exhibits that explore the natural history of Rhode Island and North America, including plant fossils from Coal Age Rhode Island that are older than dinosaurs. The planetarium features a varied schedule of brief movies and programs that take visitors to the realms of outer space.
Roger Williams Park Attractions. In addition to the zoo and Museum of Natural History & Planetarium, Roger Williams Park also features Carousel Village, several lakes, and the Temple to Music. Carousel Village is replete with a carousel, bounce house, and innovative playground that offer a large selection of adaptive structures for children with special needs. The lakes at Roger Williams Park are open to paddleboats, canoes and kayaks. Rentals are available. The Temple to Music, constructed of Vermont marble, is a favorite summer gathering place for concerts, festivals and other special events.
